The Way Back Home

by Lisa Reed   Jan 21, 2004

Looking in her eye's I can see she's had it hard,
She sits right in the corner but she is far from a coward,
Life has not been fair you can tell she's been through it all,
She never had someone there to pick her up when she did fall.

You know that makes me sad to think she was alone,
No one to take her by the hand and show her the way back home,
No one she could laugh with or stories that they could share,
No one ever took the time no one ever cared.

It would have took a second to shake her by the hand,
To maybe buy a cup of tea she would have felt real grand,
She might have felt important because you showed you cared,
She never did experience that it just seems so absurd.

And now her time is passing they've put her in a home,
Don't know how much time she's got, but still she is alone,
She never gets a visit, her days they feel like years,
The staff they never notice those silent shattered tears.

It breaks my heart in saying this happens everyday,
A loving person turned so cold cause her life turned out that way,
In life you should be happy no matter what your age,
And you should always feel so loved not cold inside and caged.

But when she goes to heaven she'll never be alone,
She'll be up there with the angels she'll have a happy loving home,
But things could have been different if someone had been there,
If only they had took the time it just seems so unfair.

So if you see an old person praying take the time to care,
Cause maybe what their praying for is that someone might be there,
God can answer prayers and even angels too,
But maybe all they really need is just a kind hello from you.

This is one of my favourites now. It's going to be a favourite with the younger people and adults too. At first I thought it was going to be a poem about a singled out child, taunted or abused, but then it turned out to be someone being left in a home. very sad but i thought it was brilliant. Well done Lisa, K
