This Winter chills me

by Jon Hunt   Mar 21, 2006

This winter chills me to my core,
I walk this path as a hundred times
Or once I did before.

And know it well, feel it, read it in my mind.
But today is different, cold, its stone.
Through this frozen wasteland once my home.

And was this where we played on grass?
And this the spot, turned to ice,
To blades of glass.

For what it was in summer months I see not now.
In better times of hope and joy,
But not as now it's crossed a line.

Trees still here, they shan't move far,
But branches barren, leaves are gone,
Shelter stolen, I move on.

Whilst birds sit up in branches bare,
They have no shelter,
Nor elsewhere.

And down here on the woodland floor,
With no need for feathers,
Wings nor more.

Walk these paths through winter's chill,
Whilst nature frozen stands here still.
With sparkling ice and frost of breath,
I can't lose sight of spring nor rest.

For it shall come, I know as well,
And when is sprung,
Stories will tell.
Of winters harsh, bare and worse,
And winters passed, with nature's re-birth.

I will wait for the day, for now I strive,
Food is scarce, and short of light,
I can but hunt and stay alive.
And survive to live for better times.

For in this winter prey does hide,
Hibernating out of sight.
And only few still around,
And even less are to be found.

As winter tears my world apart,
Has frozen me into soul in part.
And starved me till I am no more,
Than skin and bones, a weary wreck.

A wondrous thing to many indeed,
But I, myself. Don't fit in.
And may survive to greet the spring?
With hope to find the food I sought,
As I continue to walk,
This path; alone, in thought.

I really like this, I love the way you describe how different everything seems. It's got a really deep feeling to it. Well done and thanx for commenting my work too. It's interesting seeing how different people percieve the same subject.

That certainly sent chills down my spine...I love the connection you have with nature and the memories attached....sounds amazing....

Personally I'm currently saving up for an electric....but I've never played a 12 string acoustic...is it basically an acoustic with 12 strings?
