There I stood that sunny day,
A child small and weak.
But proud to be the one that played,
For the chance that it was me...
I didn't win first place that year.
I didn't hold that cup.
But still I stood above the rest,
For I was runner up...
And so the years had passed away,
And my chance had come again.
An older, stronger, faster boy,
But still I didn't win...
I stood amongst the trifled few,
Who stared loss in the face.
Saddened for again I knew,
That I, was second place...
Now as a man I stood so strong,
And I held my wife to be.
Yet, as time went by, her love had died,
And another had took her from me...
The thing that hurts me more,
Than all life's little tests.
Is the fact I'll always know,
That I, was second best...
