A book's lesson

by Alijah   Apr 11, 2006

See that book,
With the markings on its cover?
It has aged and decayed
But it is a story about lovers

A man who stood on a battlefield
Day in and day out
He fought the enemy and defended his country
He was very devout

And a woman who took care of their children
Alone she worked and slaved
Watched over three children and worked
Both of them were very brave

Then one day the man was shot
A bullet through the heart
He fell and grabbed a comrade
He had a message to give before he would depart

"Tell my wife and kids that I love them
I love them very much!
And tell my wife thanks for all she's done
I'm sorry that I'll never again be able to feel her touch."

He sighed and took his last breath
And then he crossed into the next world
His comrade went home and delivered the news
The wife cried over her husband's death

"Be strong," a voice then said,
"Be strong, my dear
I am here, watching you
So you have nothing to fear."

And the wife's tears turned to laughs
As she danced on the roof
She knew she was no longer alone
Surely, their love was enough proof

So there the story ends
The book once again is shut
And it is returned upon the shelf
But as you leave, you hear this

"Thank you for reading our story
I know it has taught you a lesson
So go home tonight and lay in bed to think
And let your burden lessen."
