What's A Father?

by Hilary   Apr 18, 2006

As I sit beneath the passing clouds,
I repeat my endless prayers -
That my baby knows I love him,
That he remembers that I care.
I pray that while he resides with the Lord,
Playing on the swings in the skies above -
That he looks down and has the knowledge,
That he is so very loved.

(Chorus)
I don't know why your daddy left,
When he heard the unforeseen news -
His fear was too overwhelming,
When I told him I was carrying you.
I don't know why he didn't dream,
Of your hair, your smile, your eyes -
Or why his immaturity came forth,
When he could not stand by my side.
But a father doesn't merely mean,
The man that created you -
No, a father is a lifelong companion,
Who helps to get you through.
A father is a protector,
Who does everything he should -
And the man that mourns you with me,
Loves you more than your father ever could.

Oh, sweetheart, I hope you know,
I hope that you can see -
The man that holds your mama close,
Who takes good care of me.
I hope that from the glowing Heavens,
You're keeping a watchful eye -
Protecting me while I await our meeting,
In the great blue gorgeous skies.

(Repeat chorus)

The man that brings me comfort, angel,
Feels my constant pain -
He knows I live in your honor,
Until we're together again.
He sheds his tears along with mine,
Just like you were his own -
And side by side with me,
His heart is now our home.

(Chorus)
