I let you down when you needed me

I wake to the sound of your voice at night
A beautiful laugh long forgotten, as you
Cry into your pillow, your heart shattered
Your soul wounded by the hate the world portrays.

You slowly fall asleep, your sobs growing softer
As your eyes grow heavy, fatigue taking over.

I walk into your room, listening to the sound
Of your steady breathing, the tears drying
On your cheeks, your dark eyelashes contrasting
Against your skin; I gently wipe away your tears.

I'm sorry I was not there for you
I'm sorry for letting you down
You were counting on me
And I failed you - I am truly sorry.

I never meant to hurt you
The last thing I wanted to do was make
You cry, doing this was
