The Bait

by Bill Turner   Apr 22, 2006

Rain falling steadily down from the grey sky
A sense of doom wrapped about her like a coat
All day feeling as if she was being watched intently
Paranoia she thought, city gripped with fear
Serial killer would not get to her, not here

Never mind her husband stalked him as the investigator
Narrowly catching him once and almost killing him before
Having left a note promising to kill all that is dear to him
At times like this ice ran through his veins he did not blink
More resolved than ever he worked the case in a deep think

Walking from her office in the cool spring rain was cleansing
Turning the corner, hating this block of addicts and homelessness
Headed to meet the love of her life for some time together
It was rare when he worked a case to make time for her, for a date
Little did she know that on this night she had become the bait

Passing the entry to the alley she smelt him first before the attack
Grabbing her by the throat and covering her mouth, drug into the dark
Mind racing, trying to remember all the things he tried to teach her
Mind flashing to the photos of the other women, horrible things done
Fear gripping her now as she realizes she in the next one

Blade slicing at her clothes removing them with precision
Smell of garbage in the air and upon his wretched breath
Looking deep into his single dark orb feeling the knife dig in her thigh
Raspy voice asking, "Where is he now, he cannot save you"
"I may take hours cutting you up before I am close to being through"

Fighting back with fury gouging his face and single eye
Feeling the knife slip into her side blood mixing with the rain
Somewhere in the dark a light is obscured for a moment a slight click
A hand grabbing him by his chin pulling him towards certain death
Explosion ringing in his ear from an errant shot, feeling hot breath

Stabbing his attacker in the thigh and going for the face
Realizing the hunted has the hunter he shouts with glee
Sinking her teeth into the back of his neck, clawing his skin
Shot striking his dark eye, husband making the shot matter
Reign of terror ending as they are bathed in blood splatter

Rain falling hard and heavy as they hold one another
Her anger dissipating with each tender kiss
Knowing he did what was right to stop this killer
Cuddling and kissing playfully nibbling at his skin
His hands finding their mark teaming with passion and a grin...

Bill it has become a while since I have had the pleasure of reading your poems .

With my hubby starting his own business at home my time on the internet is so limited to 15 minuts here, 15 there since I am on GRRR dial-up......and I must keep the phone lines open

But anyways I must say that this write is wowzers . I just had to keep seeing what was about to happen next . I went back to reread it over once more in case I had missed something in my hurried attempt to read the next lines .
I think it would make an awesome short story as well as a poem . And if I were a publisher I would publish it on my front page .But then again you know I have always been one of your biggest poetry fans.......Right....lol
Anyways I hope to catch up soon on the so many of your pieces that I have missed . Take care !
