Battle

by Vickie   Apr 22, 2006

This horses feet won't last much longer.
The tranquil thump of its feet grow weaker.
The dirt is soft, the muggy slate of a soldier's conscious is wiped with the ache of battle.
Looking off into the never-ending distance.
The mist drives through his tender eyes, moistening them with tears.
Not knowing what lies ahead, yearning for one more chance to forget.
Forget why he's here and why he was drove to this.
Forget the heartbreak, the torment, that last goodbye kiss.
How his lover's arms slipped slowly from his.
Whispering 'don't forget Me with the curves of her lips.
How she could slip so carelessly from him.
Not begging for a last touch of his skin.
He was drove into this because she left that night.
That cold, rainy night at the house.
The carriage traveled off rumbling with a faint whisper.
Goodbye to living reality, Hello nightmare.
Lost in deep thought, he only grew closer
Closer to a fight he shouldn't be in
A battle, a war, a death walked right into
A casket was waiting back home for him.
In the distance were faint roars of bombs
Gunshots were the melody of this frightful night.
The sky lit with the penetrating red
The oranges, the yellows, all fires ahead.
All the lights that lit the sky were clouds of thundering pain.
What an awful sight for someone who was already filled with dread.
A heart full of pain, an eye for an eye.
Knowing that once his body was dragged out of here dead
Not one tear would anyone cry.
In this hallowed love, this dead carcass of hurt
This destruction, this fright,
How could any of this be smart?
Why did he let her drive him to this?
This was suicide in the making, death out on a limb.
Readying his weapon, the little courage in his heart.
He head into a battle with a few bullets, one gun, and a heart full of hurt.
