Parking Lot Blues

by Susannah   Apr 27, 2006

Outside the shopping mall
I watch couple dressed in polyester,
Their hair glowing silver against the sky.
He tucks his withered hand under her chin
As he lifts it to the sky and pointsâ??
A shaky finger toward the clouds,
Tacked across a blue sea.

I thought to myself
As it all came together
Was it love like this that lasts forever?

I cant help but think to myself
What hardships they could have endured.
Was the world an enemy of their years ago?
As for now the world is all thatâ??s left.
And I guess when youâ??ve lived that long,
itâ??s the only thing that starts to make sense.

Two weeks later
At the same mall in Richmond
A tall man escorted an old woman
Across the road and to her rusty car.
she takes a shaky finger and fumbles for the lock.

He takes one look at her soft smile
And with a swift hand repays her.
He snatches the purse of the old woman.
He runs off, unable to see
That she has no reason to chase him.

She turns to me
A smile bigger than a childâ??s
She shrugs her shoulders and starts her car.

I wish that was me.
