Our Bankruptcy.

by Steven Beesley   May 2, 2006

Our Bankruptcy:

Future of a squandered past,
passions reflecting our greedy souls.
Lust for power ends with
death, even for those who win.

We are equal when we begin,
again when we do depart to
the afterlife; but yet our only
legacy that remains is our bloody aftermath.

A raped and torn earth,
that has no recourse for justice.
Yet justice will soon be served,
upon humanity's own extinction.

At what cost can we repent
and wash away our sins?
And what cost shall our children
bear and pay in their sad tomorrows?

Empty kingdoms for empty heads,
our civilization suffocating and decaying.
Like weevils in the grain,
feasting on our own oblivion.

All our credit long gone and truly spent,
no way to repay Mother Nature.
Soon our home shall be claimed,
our soils in ruin and bankruptcy.

Wow what an intense and powerfully written poem - I loved some of the early stanza's and mild references you made to religion (perhaps just my interpretation). Masterfully crafted - very poignant imagery. The first two stanza were amazing. I liked your stuff!!
