Ironic

by Just Me   May 2, 2006

They spent the night under the stars
and when the moment was just right
he whispered the three words she so longed to hear
but slowly their curfews ticked closer
and soon home was unavoidable
so packing up the midnight picnic
they headed home
when they reached that faited intersection
a car ran the red light
crashing into the passenger side
killing the girl
leaving the boy uninjured
but unconscious
a few weeks later at the girls funeral
teachers family and friends
stood up to say
how kind polite and funny she was
to say how well behaved and smart she was
when he stood up
he looked around
and then at the closed casket
tears shook his body
slowly he turned back to the crowd
in a whisper that everyone could hear
he said I loved her
and in another whisper he said i would gladly change places right now if only
if only i got to say goodbye
and with that he crumbled to the floor
moaning with agony
the family asked the people
to write down something about her
that made her great
slowly as everyone
wrote down pleasing things
he stood up again
and said something
that is still whispered today
she made such an impact on all of us
it seems so hard to think that now shes gone
then the pastor got up
he opened her black bible
and he turned to her favorite psalm in the bible
slowly he started reading
he read it loud and clear
but when he turned the page he found a note
he read it for a moment
then smiled
and said
God promises us a rainbow after every rain
so I guess that means for every tear
there is a rainbow too
with that the service ended
the casket was taken to a grave with a headstone
it read simply this
"Daughter and Friend student and Christian
a loss to be mourned
but a rainbow to us all"
