Opposites Attract (A Poem about Racism)

by Moriah Trimm   Feb 10, 2004

You're black as night,
he's white as light.
You sit, you argue,
you stand, you fight.

You think about what is right,
but he's not thinking,
he's not that bright.

You say "Listen man,
this isn't right.
We shouldn't be arguing,
we should be tight."
He replies "Me and you tight? What are you thinking?
You say its not right but it has to be,
because to be right,
is to be white."

You're saying "White is a color,
so is black.
Put two and two together
and work your way back."
He's saying "What's so great about black?
It's nothing to compare.
Your ancestors sat in a shack
with nothing to do but labor
and stare,
while my ancestors sat in luxury, their table never bare."

You say "Man, you know nothing,
not anything at all.
Your pride is real short man,
you think you're so tall.
You say my ancestors are bad,
but you know whats worse?
Your ancestors did it,
it's the white mans curse."

The words his him hard,
he'd never thought of it that way. Had he thought this way before he'd of seen the light of day.

It's now a year later,
you're best friends,
tight buds.
When you look back now
it hurts to remember the duds.

You sit back and smile
as you enjoy his company,
then you think to yourself
"It was all worth the while."

One word of advice
I give to you all:
get to know each other,
don't help the fall.

I like it theres just something people just dont see in me they are just to worried about me being 2 colors...im half white and half black....so im in a world where i gotta find my match,
So some people may say whats the catch,
    I say look at me
    What do you see?
A girl thats broken from both worlds
    Im just an ordinary girl
    NO need to hate,
If you wanna turn back time
    sorry itz to late....

Just something i thought of i think about it all day everyday...
