Growing up
Watching my parents leave early in the morning
Returning only
After thirteen hours of the day went by
And we were all asleep
Waiting for them to return
Hoping they would come home early
As we waited for the day to pass,
We tried everything
To keep ourselves entertained
Six kids, my grandma...and me.
The three youngest
Running around the house.
The two in the middle,
Coming up with their own ways
To keep them selves entertained,
And out of trouble from our grandma
Then there was my sister...
Playing in the sprinklers,
Finding someone to take us to the beach.
Or even go downtown,
Where we would all beg for money to go spend.
Save your money,
Buy something more useful.
My parents always said.
Summers on the island
With no one home.
Free to run around
And do what we wanted.
Never seeing our parents was hard.
But we were occupied, hunting for treasure
Or a trail to follow
Seeking out new adventures.
Things have changed so much
Since those adventurous days,
As we get older
The adventures disappeared
And we never noticed how good we had it
Until it was all gone.
