But Sometimes Daddy Would Cry

by RainbowSlider   May 30, 2006

My father was always a big man.
All his life he was an Army man.
He grew up during the depression.
He lived through the recession.

I remember the way he would tower.
I was always afraid of his power.
He wasn't much in the way of talking.
We would hunt together and go walking.

He taught me to swim by throwing me in.
He said if you want to live you better swim.
I always wanted to be like dad when I was a boy.
Sometime he was gone so there was just mom's story.

Dad was always so tough but pretty fair, too.
The way I was; he didn't know always what to do.
He had a hard life and drank-ed all the time.
He would have me work the jukebox and give me a dime.

He loved to play checkers and shoot pool.
Dad always believed in the golden rule.
I never caught dad in a lie.
But sometimes daddy would cry.
