Let's Do Better

by Michelle   Feb 19, 2004

Why must there be a thing called hate
Why can't we all just live as one?
We will all go to the same fates
When our time on this earth is done.
Why does it matter if one is black or white?
Why can't we seem to get along?
Why must we continuously fight,
And make others feel they don't belong?
Why do children say such cruel things
Learn to ridicule and point out what's "wrong"
This incessant teasing will in their ears ring,
For so very, very long.
Then as those merciless ones grow older
You'd think they could have learned
But no, they just continue to smolder
Not caring who gets burned.
Words can hurt so very much
Cut deep just like a knife,
I don't understand why people have such
Blatant disregard for another's life.
If it's not the color of my skin
It's the unfashionable clothes I wear
Why can't we see it's what's within
Not how we dress or fix our hair?
Maybe they're not thin enough,
Or maybe come from the wrong side of the track
But the things those say to feel so tough...
They can never take them back.
The ones aiming those hurtful darts might be truly sorry
But all their targets can do is forgive, not forget
For those words are engraved, don't you worry
They'll remember them, it's a bet.
So please, let us all just try
To be a bit more caring and kind
Attempt to make someone smile, not cry
And to others feelings not be so blind.

You're telling me this your first attempt at this kind of poem? lol
It was really good and I'm not just saying that either, the message was great and the way you managed, really well to rhyme it ABAB was brilliant. I'll have to make an effort to do one now, well done Michelle, K
