Broken Leg, Broken Dream (about The 2006 Preakness Stakes)

Broken Leg, Broken Dream

It was a bright day, that ended black,
That fateful Saturday, in which Barbaro was lead onto the Pimlico Track
He was the undefeated winner of the Kentucky Derby,
The colt was the favorite for the Preakness, obviously
The colt looked at his stable buddy, as if he was scared
"Please let me go back" the colt must have said "Im still unprepared"
Still they put Barbaro in the sixth gate
From there, things started to not look so great
With a powerful thrust, from the gate he tore
A feat like this took great power, and was not something to ignore
People watching began to cry and shout
But the race officials gave the colt the benefit of the doubt
They led him back to the gate, and he stood
Knowing they would tell him to run when he could
Soon the race started, as Barbaro ran,
Everyone hoped he would win again
Barbaro was out in the pack, at not even a furlong
When suddenly he stepped down wrong
There was a sharp pain in the horses leg,
As his jockey pulled up, Barbaro seemed to beg
"Please let me finish the race,"
"My leg wont hold me back, I promise I'll get first place"
The vets ran out and came to his aid,
They took him to his stall and the barn seemed surrounded by a parade
The day which started with a smile, ended with a frown,
As Barbaro lost the Triple Crown.
