American Soldier

by Hilary   Jul 4, 2006

The sun shines in my window
As I'm welcomed into another day...
I roll over in bed, to gaze at your picture
Hoping the image of your face
Will keep a smile upon mine
As I face the hours ahead.
I'm scared.
My soldier stands proudly
Fulfilling the dreams he has had
For years before we met...
I am proud.
Today, we celebrate.
We celebrate our freedom, our liberty.
Today doesn't seem so free.
I'm locked in a box
Full of memories and desires
Of the life I wish to live
With my traveling soldier.
Before I can complain of the early morning hours,
I stop myself, and laugh...
Knowing you were awoken many before.
Your day started before your body
Was ready to release itself from slumber,
Yet you did not complain.
You face heat and humidity,
Disturbance and frustration,
Trials and tribulations...
And still, you manage to remind me of your love.
You give me the only gift you can -
A smile on your face when you call...
Words of longing and need...
Feelings of strength,
Strength to make it through another day,
Walking through each hour, knowing,
I'm loved by an American Soldier.
