I could hear the sirens going up and down the street,
Thinking to myself, what's going on.
Hoping it wasn't someone I knew,
Later I found out it was my good friend.
The next day I got a phone call from my next door neighbor,
Telling me what happened.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing,
Emotions were taking over my body.
How could this happen?
I asked myself over and over again.
I had just seen him yesterday,
He was here, standing beside me.
Who would do this?
Feelings swallowing me whole,
I can't deal with this, I said over and over again.
Lord, please help me get through this, I said.
Why?
What did he do to deserve this, what did I do to deserve this?
Answer me, I said.
Surrounded by fear, all hope was gone.
Reminiscing on the past was all I could do now.
I remember the day I met you,
We were kids at the time.
Everyone was staring at us while we laughed and played.
Color wasn't an issue for us because we knew.
We were kids and just needed a friend,
A friend to laugh with when we would make a funny face,
A friend to cry with when our football flew over the fence,
A friend to play with when there was no one else,
We were just kids they'd say, we didn't know any difference in our skin.
We were there.
Growing up, you had your friends and I had my friends,
Despite the change, we still played together.
You were older, but still managed to find time to play with your old friends,
Whether it was a teammate, or just someone to hang out with, you were there.
Looking back on all our adventures,
The only thing I could do now was cry,
For now I knew what it was like to lose someone I was very close to.
Friends come and go, but their spirit lies within you
When that time comes, you will remember all the fun times we shared,
And all the days we spent together.
I know you're still with me, watching me from above.
