Dusk on the Fell

by Jemma   Jul 11, 2006

Midnight against the darkening sky
The moon lies basking in its cradle
She smiles beneath half lidded eyes
Crowned in clouds and a black halo

I stand gazing up, feel me floating
Can't get higher, bound to the earth
One single star shines on bravely
One man's fight to light up the world

Pebbles trick my unsteady feet
And I fall into the comfort of shadows
And the cattle stamps the ground
Unsure of my immediate arrival

I stand trapped in the silence
But for the steady drip of my sodden clothes
My face pales staring to the clouds
Now raining, cleansing me

The wind is picking up and it whistles to me
Its merry tunes that dance upon the shadows
And the house on the fell stands darkened
But the forgotten fires twinkle in the abyss

My feet follow the long hidden footsteps
Along trails lost in the labyrinth of the land
And the haunting birds stand cawing
Mercilessly into the silent rhythm of the night

Nothing to hold my hand in the darkness
So I close my eyes and listen to the grasses
Beneath my feet and find my footing
And a place where I am just parts of the midnight weave

A small skirmish with time
The seconds seem to dim as my senses seem to dull
But I know I do not ponder the possibility of sleep
The last light vanishes as someone draws a velvet curtain
Calling for closure and breath
