Foolish

Your pain is foolish,
Said the angel,
Stretching her wings above me.

But it hurts so bad,
I replied,
When I feel the pain,
It almost feels like I had died.

You are weak,
Said she,
And her feathers swept around me.
Come, let me show you the real world,
For I want you to see.

No,
I am afraid of heights,
I said as she began to lift me up.

Fear not,
She replied,
For you are with me.

I clung on tightly,
As she swept up into the clouds,
I spotted my house,
And my parents among the crowds.

See there,
She pointed.
That child is starving.
See that dog,
Barking in pain?

And look,
A robin broke its wing,
And has fallen,
To lie frozen.

Look at that man,
Without any money,
His wife just threw him out,
With barely a suitcase,
And a goodbye shout.

Look at the blood,
That pools on the floor,
The dead soldiers lie still,
To be joined by more and more.

Look at the houses,
That were burnt,
And lay like dust on the floor.

I ask you,
Dear child,
Do you wish to see more?

No,
I replied,
And shielded my eyes.
No,
I have seen enough.

I opened me eyes,
And I was back on the ground.

Your pain is foolish,
Said the angel to me.

Yes, so it is,
I replied,
My eyes growing wide,
And then I wept,
Rather foolishly.
