Just the Same

by Taylor   Jul 21, 2006

It was a normal day in Kindergarten
As we played in the beating sun
Being with my brand new friend
I had never had so much fun

We raised our hands for roll call
As the teacher yelled each name
I could tell his skin was darker
But our palms were just the same

Elementary School had begun
The tasks became more tough
But he always stood beside me
When things were getting rough

We walked the halls together
Not feeling and ounce of shame
I could tell his skin was darker
But our palms were just the same

Next it was time for Junior High
Where people started to change
Yet he never left my side when
All the others were acting strange

On stage in play I saw him clapping
As my first song met with acclaim
I could tell his skin was darker
But our palms were just the same

We had made it to High School
I was scared of everything inside
But I felt safe walking with him
As our feet were in perfect stride

He led me onto the dance floor
The night of the first home game
I could tell his skin was darker
But our palms were just the same

Graduation had finally arrived
After waiting out four long years
As we put on our cap and gown
My eyes welled up with tears

Walking towards the stage together
I heard cheers from the audience
And looking up at my best friend
I could see not one difference
