The American Dream

by Lenny   Aug 2, 2006

Ragged flag falls,
Banner plucked from the sky,
Proud slogan for freedom,
Consumed in conflagration,
Rights and equality tarnish,
Civil dignity ablaze,
That time worn flag burns,
Ardent flames lick its stars,
Its stripes depart one by one,
And its meaning filters,
to the very sky in which it once flew,
Once proud colors decorate the wind,
Burning hopes and dreams,
Of the people,
Conform to the inferno,
The American Dream,
Now cinders,
Nothing left but vacant flagpoles,
Browned string, and tattered ends,
Ashes, vestiges, ruins,
As the peoples trust dies,
Along with that burdened flag,
The reds, whites and the blues,
Lost in the flames of innocence,
As society twists rights,
The system drowns itself,
And the America as we know it dies,
The succession of events,
The match strikes,
The material alights,
And the peoples flag is gone.
