Innocent tears fall on her pale skin
as a strangers warmth is holding her close
and she explains to the girl that what happened was a sin
for no matter the situation, there are other options.
The girl dressed in black lies upon the mound of dirt
and she whispers her sweet words through the barrier
where her mothers' corpse lays inert
and the tears drench the deceit away.
With eyes so green and a heart so pure
she rocks back and forth chanting to herself
whispering: "I love you mom, 'cause i know love's the only cure."
as she closes her eyes and her breathing goes faint.
She jolts awake to the sun shining through her blinds
and she stumbles out of bed to an empty house
but she knows the difference between right and wrong in her mind
as she stretches and slumps around the house.
The telephone cord, tripping her to her knees
she picks it up and listens to a dial tone pulsing in her ear
and this is what she says at the press of a button:
"operator, if you could, i would like the number to heaven,
for i did not get to say good-bye
and he is watching me now,
from cloud 37, smiling
and i want him to know that i'm alright
and that mommy will be fine
she just went to get her soul back
and then she'll be home
i want to catch on some things,
i haven't been able to do that in awhile
and i wanna know how his first skyball game went
and if the angels poured the rain down during intermission
to make a rainbow spotlight on his number 37 brown jersey
tracking around the cloud patches.
I wanna know if one day he'll teach me to make snow flakes
and let me sprinkle them down,
and watch the shapes flow slowly down
and i wanna know why he hasn't come to visit in awhile
and i want to tell him how much i miss work days
when he would stumble through the front door
throwing his briefcase and keys down and hold his arms out for me
it's been several months now, and most of all...
i just wanna hear his voice one last time.
And operator, if you can't give me the number,
will you at least leave a message for me
and tell him spot will be okay
he just went down to the johnsons\' farm to chase birds and rabbits;
and if he closes his eyes real tight, he can see him,
tongue flopping and tail wagging,
and if he listens real close, he can hear his heart beat
pounding with every gallop.
And operator, don't forget to tell him that i love him."
The line went dead and no voice was heard,
but that of rain trickling on the windows
and that of a little yellow singing bird
and she knew that he got her message.
