The Shawshank Redemption Poem

by Rowena Linley   Aug 22, 2006

Guilty

Two life Sentences

Back to back

For a crime Andy did not commit

Despite the evidence the prosecutors submit

Inside Shawshank Prison

Andy befriends Red

Andy tells him why he is in

For shooting his wife and her lover dead

Did not do it

Innocent

Drunk

Endures mistreatment

By the guards

Corrupt they were

Repeated rapes

By the hands of The Sisters

Four fellow prisoners

Before prison he was a banker

Inside a prisoner

With a talent

A launderer of money

Life goes on

As time passes

An elderly convict

Known as Brooks

Set free at last

After fifty years

Shawshank was his home

Lost

Afraid

Confused

Don't know what to do

In the end he wrote a letter

To Red, Andy and the boys

I have decided not to stay

Hangs himself in his room

New boy comes

Attitude

Experience in jail

Makes friends with Andy and Red

Tells Andy he is innocent

Murderer in another prison

Andy ask for help

The warden unwilling

To lose

Andy's assistance

With elicit schemes

In solitary he goes

New boy shot dead

By the corrupt warden

Andy worked hard

Scraping a tunnel in a wall

Hard

Twenty years

Manages at last

Tunnel

Sewage pipe

Once outside

The laundered money he takes

The money illegally obtained by warden

Runs

To Mexico

Local newspaper

Implicating warden and chief guard

Suicide

Warden dead

Chief guard arrested

Red finally released

After trying for parole

For many years

Despairing

Lost

Takes up offer

Goes to Mexico

To join Andy

But breaks his parole
