Paper Lanterns

by Jenn   Sep 4, 2006

We danced this night while memories hung above
Like little paper lanterns illuminating the sky
We held on our wrists priceless gold watches
Counting every second that flew on by

Curling her fingers around my neck
She murmured soft promises in my ear
I laid my forehead against her own
Watching the stars shine in her every tear

The lanterns fell and time halted to a stop
I reached for her shaking hands again
A crack in the earth had formed between us
And I was sure love amounted to nothing then

Our bond broke apart, her face became a blur
But I live to learn and so I learned to live
Those paper lanterns still light up my sky
And somehow I know they'll never give
