The Day After

by T.M.S.   Sep 6, 2006

The day after a horrible deed had been done,
An officer on duty after losing a loved one.
The loved one not related strictly by family,
But a brother in blue, related by camaraderie.

Two people had died in a hail of gunfire,
No one could have known what was to transpire.
If they had it might have been changed,
Maybe somehow fate could've been rearranged.

One person to die was an honorable man,
Who spent his life being the best that he can.
An officer, a father, a best friend to many,
A shoulder to lean on, and a savior to plenty.

The other one a criminal, a horrible guy,
A person who didn't care if someone were to die.
Surely no one missed him, no one was to care,
This officer wouldn't go to his funeral, no one would be there.

Now the day after this happened, this officer was back,
Doing his best not to let his mind get side-tracked.
Sitting in a parking lot filling out papers,
The forms he filled out when he ruined criminal's capers.

His mind started to wander, and he drifted into tears,
Remembering the good times that they shared throughout the years.
He couldn't understand why it had to end that way,
Why some inhuman monster took his friend's life that day.

Then suddenly he saw a small boy standing outside his car,
He did his best to smile, but it didn't go very far.
The boy said, "Is something wrong? It looks like you've been crying,"
And the officer said, "Yes, son, I have. I'm sick of good men dying."

"I'm sick of my brothers in blue being slain,
And I'm sick of having to deal with this impossible pain.
I'm sick of watching loved ones find out what it cost,
While we drape flags over the caskets of those that we've lost."

"See yesterday one of my brothers in blue,
He was responding to a call, it was a 10-32.
Some guy was outside and he was waving a gun,
He was threatening that he would kill his small son."

"I was there but not directly at the site,
I was keeping the innocent bystanders away that night.
The man started to aim, so he tried to get that gun away,
He ended up giving his life for that small child that day."

The boy started crying, he was very sad too,
He said, "I'm sorry that he died, I wish there was something I could do."
The officer got out of his car, and he spent a little time,
Consoling the small boy, and trying to be kind.

The officer said, "Thank you for caring, not many seem like they do,
It's nice to meet someone who cares, a good person like you."
The boy gave the officer a hug before he got back in his car,
They were just about done talking but he didn't get very far.

The boy said, "I think I know how you're feeling,
I think you're all heroes, stopping the people who are killing and stealing.
And I know that you all risk your lives every day,
And not many people say the things they should say."

"But I want you to know, that I was there too,
I was standing there as my daddy killed your brother in blue.
And I'm thankful for what your friend did 'cause, see,
The boy who your friend saved last night was me."
