With Poppop

For My Poppop

I wish that I had listened more
To the stories you loved to tell
You could come up with anything
In this you greatly excelled

You loved to take me on a walk
Step by step, you'd hold my hand
Whenever I stayed at your house
I was treated like I was grand

You'd let me pick out a matching tie
And you'd wear it like a king
And often with your old guitar
I'd hear you start to sing

You'd tell me about the band
That in, you once had played
Every fond memory you had to share
Was back in the good ole' days

You loved to say those words I'd said
That in the morning would you awaken
I was 3 and I'd tell you
That my stomach was hungry for eggs n' bacon

You'd get up despite the hour
And make me my favorite meal
Looking back on when I lived there
I miss the way that feels

And now you are much older
The past is all that you now know
I feel an emptiness inside
With each teardrop it grows

They say you barely know names
And faces you mistake
I could almost not bear the pain
When I asked if mine was erased

But to my surprise and joy
They said How could he forget
You're his favorite girl
And you needn't fret

So as I write this poem for you
And cry these tears of mine
I want you to know I love you
I've loved you all this time.
