This Time He's Gone too Far She thought they were in love, So many years ago. Now all she has as souvenirs, Are the scars from every blow. A marriage she always wanted, But not a happy family. She felt like there was no way out, Trapped for all eternity. The blows kept on coming, Night after night. She did nothing to deserve them, She knew it wasn't right. But what was she to do, She couldn't leave him now. She had nowhere to run, And even so, she didn't know how. Nothing seemed to change, It was always quite the same. He'd come home in a fit of drunkenness, And think that she was to blame. She tried to talk nice, Then she tried to run away. But before she could get far, He'd pull her back and say. "Why do you keep doing this, Starting all your fights? I'm sick of all this crap, I ought to end it all tonight." She'd apologize even though, She knew she didn't do anything wrong. She'd ask him to forgive her, And then try to get along. She was tired of the drill, It was getting way too old. All she wanted was someone, To trust, to love, and hold. But what she had was a monster, A man who didn't know wrong from right. A man who got what he wanted, Not her love, but her fright. He burst through the door that night, Just like she knew he would. The first thing he did was yell, Because he knew he could. He came over and hit her, For not having dinner set out. He called her every name in the book, He continued to yell and shout. Then he went and hit her, Hard across the face. She ran into the front room, He quickly gave chase. But tonight there was something different, He'd had more than usual to drink. He was uncontrollable, He wasn't able to think. He hit her so hard, She violently fell down. Hitting her head again a sharp corner, He heard only a moaning sound. Seeing she was no longer moving, A horrible realization occurred. He'd murdered his wife, Everything was becoming a blur. He called the police thinking, He could lie his way out of this mess But they knew better when they got there, They didn't have to second guess. And it was only at that moment, When he was loaded into the squad car. He had a moment of clarity and realized, That this time he's gone too far.
