Her Heart Still Waits

by Twisted Heart   Sep 11, 2006

Among the ashes, they sift with haste
A soldier's gun lies there beside
The cave where they had found a place
To finally rest on this heated night.
But though they searched, it was in vain
No living soul around there found
Just faceless soldiers without names
Scattered debris upon the ground.

Back Home

She's heading home, a hard day at work
She's picked the mail up from the box
She is tired, her weak body hurts
But times are harder since he's been lost.

Now, a letter has come to relate
It says no survivors have been found
She sets in darkness as she waits
For her heart's screams to give sound.

Her heart, her soul, has crumbled here
Upon the page that bears the news
Her husband dead, it's so clear
She couldn't believe that it was true.

But now, she has the confirmation
And she reaches for the phone
She dials numbers so familiar
To tell me Doug has been called home.

I've waited here, so strong at times
Yet weak to hear those words forsaken
That my friend had died that day
My strength has now been shaken.

They gave him the Purple Heart that day
It was sent with a letter of deep regret
This bitter war that the Government played
Was one that we won't easily forget.

Dear victims who were called to fight
For reasons that were not their own
But they forged the battle through the night
With little hope of coming home.

Wow, i really liked this. both sections - they seemed like two independent but related poems. the first part is excellent, and the second flows well and is sophisticated. you capitalized "It" a few times that you didn't need to, but that's just a small thing that's easily fixed. (unless you intended that?) anyways, good job

Your words brought tears to my eyes. honestly, the futility of war is felt and repented by so many around the world. And yet, time and again, it is the innocent that are pawned in this fight for more glory.

i hope all this stops, before it's too late

    peace and prayers
