Mistake

by Caitlin Fedorak   Sep 12, 2006

She woke up in a dark container of some sorts. She tried to sit up, but there was a barrier of some sorts keeping her from getting up, the space was so tiny she couldnâ??t even change her position. Her head pounded with pain. Everything was black.
She heard weeping and cries. The cries of people she knew. Was this some sort of prank her friends were playing on her? She tried to think of the last thing she could remember. What was the last thing she had done?
As she thought about it, she began to remember. She was with her friends-Anton, Renee, and Sam. They were walking downâ?¦where were they walking? She couldnâ??t remember. Suddenly she felt a jerk, and she and whatever she was in were being lifted down. Down from what? She tried to think, but all she could concentrate on was the pain. It was increasing now. She couldnâ??t move her legs-were they strapped down? She didnâ??t know. She couldnâ??t even feel her legs, never mind what ever was holding them down.
Suddenly she was no longer going down. All movement outside stopped. There were no voices-there wasnâ??t anything to reassure her that she wasnâ??t alone. What was happening? She tried lifting her leg again, but she seemed unable to have the strength. It was almost as though her brain couldnâ??t remember how to work her legs. She tried wiggling her toes as well-but that didnâ??t work either. She could move her fingersâ?¦and her armsâ?¦but for some reason, not her legs.
After what seemed to be hours, it began to get cold in her confined space. She tried to warm herself by wrapping her arms around herself-but being unable to change her position, it seemed almost impossible to get comfortable.
She tried to remember. She wished she could remember, but it made her head hurt even more, and the cold was making it worse. She was only wearing what seemed to beâ?¦a dress? Why hadnâ??t she brought a sweater with her? She tried to think. If she was wearing a dress, that meant she was going somewhere formal. A dance? Why couldnâ??t she remember?
She felt something cold on her neck. She moved her arm as much as she could, and grasped what was on her neck. It seemed to be a necklaceâ?¦a locket. Of course. It was her locket from Anton. They had been dating for a year, and he bought her a locket in the shape of a heart.
She began to grow tired, and she fell asleep. She didnâ??t know how long she slept because she had no way of telling time. It must have been forever. When were her friends going to come and get her? They were going to a movie! That was it! Thatâ??s where they were walkingâ?¦so why werenâ??t they there? They crossed the road to go the theaterâ?¦but she couldnâ??t remember actually watching the movie. She thought and thought, and suddenly, fear swept over her.
A car had pulled out of an alley, the driver had stolen the carâ?¦she remembered now. She didnâ??t cross the road fast enough. She had been hit, and she was sent to the hospitalâ?¦her mother and father had visited her often, as did her friends. She remembered being told her legs were paralyzed, and that she may slip into a coma, and that the chances of her living were slim.
She frantically began to cry, and pounded on the coffin lid.
