The Darkside of War

by Lindsay   Sep 18, 2006

An echo of a gunshot rings in the distance,
A soldiers blood has been spilled on the lands.
In battle there are no winners,
Just the taint of war on each ones hands.

The fearful gaze of a child,
As he notices my gun.
I wonder where his family is
As he wonders what I've done.

I hear a rustle in the corner,
My stomach turns at what I see.
A man and woman covered in blood,
"Oh Lord, was this me?"

The troops that I serve with,
Were stationed here this day.
"Kill all enemy soldiers"
Was all the Sergeant would say.

"This man and woman were here by mistake"
A fellow soldier whispers in my ear.
I look at the young child
And all I saw was his fear

I am a soldier for my country,
I'm sorry innocent people have to die.
"To protect and to serve,"
Are the words I will always live by.

The thought of death haunts my mind,
I never wanted to hurt anyone,
By days end I am drained.
Wondering, "When will this be done?"

I will not sleep this night,
For all I hear are cries.
One more child is alone,
As another innocent dies
