Deeper Than A Bottomless Pit

by Sarah Ann   Sep 19, 2006

I was the girl...The lucky one.
Though I could barely recall,
I remember.
The girls, they envied me;
Said I was pretty, said I was lucky.
In ways it was true,
But fame wasn't luxurious to me
And I remember
How it seemed that I could touch the sky
And grab any star I wanted.
All that, all this, is without one by my side.

It ended. Life died with no particular reason:
Not greed; the basic downfall of civilization,
It is bigger.
Something that burns in every heart and soul
Without denial.
Something that even I had;
For I had everything else.

Jealousy.

It pierced my skin like a thousand needles,
And my blood was drained...
Then my flesh flapped over,
And I fell.

I remember...
I fell harder than the lowest or saddest loner.
I fell deeper than a bottomless pit could have taken me,
Because I was jealous.
And there I was. Here I am.
The girl who once had everything,
But ended up with nothing.

    This poem is simply amazing.

    The poem is a comment on how one often fails to acknowledge their own beauties and skills. We often feel like our greatness should succeed beyond the capacity of everyone else. The narrator could touch the sky and grab a star but never appreciate the comfort of privilege until she falls by her own faults and suffers a torment of her own thoughts and insecurities.

    We fail to appreciate the things we have and are blinded by the things we want, things we might never have.

    The poem reveals a dark aspect of the human condition.
