I Love You

by alone in the crowd   Sep 23, 2006

The grains of rough sad rub between my toes. i watch your mouth move but i try to drown out your words with the roar of the foam. you are explaining why, a question i have asked many times before but i can't look into your eyes, i will only see the reflection of the sun setting. I peer out toward the horizon, the beginning but i see nothing. the ocean sprays mist upon my face like the tears i wish to have shed. you continue to talk but i can't listen. the seagulls wait on the edge of the beach, they should be flying. i turn to face you and i see the reflection i dreaded, the sun setting on the horizon, on the beginning. you smile a warm, heartfelt smile. you hold me close. the sea rumbles to drown out the sounds you whisper. i return your smile, then turn and walk toward the horizon, toward a new beginning.
