Springing Forward in Fall

by Taylor Porton   Mar 12, 2004

I breathe in deeply, smelling fall
I wobble in shoes that make me too tall
Memories of summer fade away,
my backpack is light; no books today

I'm a little bit scared.
Will my teachers be mean?
Kids scrambling around, it's quite a scene
Will my friends be there, as they said?
I'm hoping and wishing...
I wish I'd stayed in bed

Ten minutes to spare
Now where do I go?
How is my hair?
Where is someone I know?

Is that the bell? It sounded funny.
It's gotten warm, my make-ups runny.
I race to my class, it seems so far
I turn the corner, and
There, You are.

My day has improved, you're a sight for sore eyes
I wear a huge smile and one of us sighs.
You're as relieved as I am,
We both speak too fast
The new school years begun, it's started at last.
