To My Mom and Dad

I feel like words cannot express
All the love I hold inside
There is so much I'd like to tell you
Nothing I want to hide

Thank you for your years of care
And all the patience you've shown
I know I wouldn't be who I am
If loving seeds you hadn't sewn

I know I wasn't always perfect
The sun didn't always shine on me
But even when my light faded
You'd discipline so I could see

I had said unfair things to you
That I didn't really mean
And I'm glad you understood
And were so forgiving

You've taught me to give my best
In all that I try to do
And giving up isn't an option
That's a quitter's attitude

You told me to show true love
Even if it isn't given in return
To look at others experiences
Use their lessons to learn

You taught me words are better said
If planned before their spoken
That lashing out can cause much pain
And friendships can be broken

You've not told me lies about life
I know it will be hard
But thanks to you I'll handle it
With much fewer scars

And love is something I can share
With someone, someday
There's two parts in a relationship
And my role I can play

I'm not quite ready to be on my own
But I'm close to being there
And I'm glad my life thus far
Is something we have shared

I've seen so many families
That don't have this kind of bond
It's sad the way they live
I'm glad we've held so strong

You've been far more than parents
You're my closest friends
And without you I'd be nothing
