Second Best

I couldn't be the girl
Who came next in line
Rebound isn't fun
And you aren't really fine

You're thinking of her
When you're talking to me
We aren't the same
But you're still in a dream

My stomach aches with pain
Because I know we are right
But you'll never see it
When she's on your mind

I'm sure she had reasons
She could see you were wrong
But you loved her so much
And now I'm all alone

I wish I'd been first
But it was too soon
Now the timing's off
Passed too many moons

All of these nights
I have sat and I've prayed
There's no hope though
The consequences I've weighed

I just can't be second
If she always gets first
And now there's no way
To go hit reverse

She's touched your heart
And reached into your soul
She walked away
But still has control

Now there's a lock
Where I once had the key
But she changed the codes
And ruined me

I still love you
Of this there's no doubt
But thanks to her
You've both locked me out

I pray one day
You'll finally let her go
But for us it's too late
And we'll never know

So goodbye to you
And all we could have become
If only you hadn't
To her powers succumb
