What do I feel

by x.Athame.x   Oct 2, 2006

I've had people ask me "how are you?",
I've taken to stopping, and pausing before answering,
Such a simple and common question,
Yet is the answer truly a simple one?
Is there but one emotion or feeling that I have?
When I suddenly stop, just stop,
I think about that question for a moment,
Not long,
Just a moment,
I understand,
Or so I think,
That perhaps that is not so simple,
But maybe its not so complex,
I feel so many things in my life,
I see so many things,
Hear so many, like the birds in the sky,
Taste so many, like the apple before me,
Understand so much, like who I am,
I have so many emotions coursing through my veins like fire,
I have so many different ideas running through my head like water,
So I stop
just stop
and think
then I answer,
"I'm alive"

**My first ever free-verse sort of thing. Please, please vote/comment. I'm not so sure how I did... Thanks.**

Well, not that I ever know what I'm doing when it's a free verse or anything, but I think the point in calling it a free verse is that you get to make it your own. There's no rules, and honestly, I don't think you can really do a bad/wrong job, especially if you're expressing thoughts or feelings - emotions, opinions and your own decisions: nobody can mess with those.
Anyway, my thoughts on this is simple, as it is a really good poem. I liked that you took something so common (and, for lack of another word, simple...) and turned it into a thought provoking thing. I grew up thinking that the only way to respond to a question like that is just to say 'good'. Not because I was always good, but because it was polite, or that people wouldn't worry. My boyfriend showed me otherwise, and for that reason and that reason only, am I able to (now) understand the complexity of such a common question...We're all too fast to answer it, and don't see that it's really much deeper than one might think. So, great idea pointing that out, and even better job writing it out. :)
