The Chest

by Chase   Oct 12, 2006

I knelt before a wooden box,
What appeared to be a Chest.
Search over the outer wood,
To find my family crest.

I slowly pulled the Chest ajar,
And gradually glanced inside.
Purple velvet laced the walls,
Yet no space occupied.

Alas, one thing was in the chest,
Intricate and simple.
A white Tulip lay all alone,
With pedals of soft ripples.

Fear struck my face, froze at my Heart,
Dilation pulsed my eyes.
My Heart stopped beating, my body turned numb,
Lungs felt tightly tied.

I knew what was of this Chest,
No longer to my surprise.
For soon to come I'd join this Tulip,
In our for-longing demise...

Shivers much! This is a chillingly powerful write. Just, so well written, great rhyme, flow, really natural and incredibly clever.

This was an amazing piece. Your emotions were deeply expressed through your intense words. Everything fit so perfectly and the flow was flawless. And this piece is too amazing to simply pick ONE favorite stanza, or even just a few favorite lines. a great write. 5/5.

You have to leave more information from interpretation in this poem. You can't just leave it "longing demise" because you did not leave enough information to know what the Tulip is for.

However, I will try to take a swing at it.

I am aware that sometimes, Tulips are used in funeral ceremonies.

"I" felt that the poem was about an old man looking through a family chest. Perhaps their were thing sin the chest, but not of importance, so that is why he said their was and empty space.

I see in my eyes, I am having a picture of him, looking at a Tulip, a flower. Maybe of his fathers, wife, or someone of great emotional and sentimental importance to him. He looks at the flower and maybe he is thinking, that perhaps his time draws near. That it could be that someone else, maybe a son or daughter, close relatives or friends. Might use a Tulip as the main flower of his future yet to be funeral.

I think, he see's his death near.

That is my interpretation of it.
