A Poet's Critique

by DMG   Oct 24, 2006

I've heard it said that when one judges a poem
One should judge context and leave style alone
Be astute and if meaning strongly flows throughout
Well that's what a great poem is all about

But I must beg to differ with this kind of critique
Because if style is lacking then the whole poem is weak
If the blank verse is too blank as to even lack sense
And the grammar is incorrect, for instance in tense,
Then a poem is not a poem but a jumble of words
And the only meaning derived is the writer's absurd
And knowledge in writing and a rhythm that flows
Are necessities for poetry as everyone knows

So to that poor writer who thinks he is blessed
Turn that pencil around and shove it through your chest.
