Starry night

by Unrequited   Oct 24, 2006

Under the stars, golden and bright
we stare in awe at the spacious skies
taking in the beauty, we hold our breath
we have lived our lives
and now they must end

a tear in my eye
i lean over, "it's coming right for us, isn't it, Ben?"
a calm and frightened look was his only reply
turning my attention back to the yellow-spotted blanket,
i whisper, "i can't believe this is it"
countless memories,
they really do flash before your eyes.

some scream, some cry
most on the ground, kneeling with folded hands
together on the hilly grass,
neighbors and strangers alike
a cloud begins to cry
shimmering tears come crashing down
seconds remaining,
the black, monstrous rock ever so close

a last thought for my mother
"i'll see you soon," with a teary smile upon my face
one final look at the stars before they disappear
once golden, now hidden
i close my eyes
and take one last breath
