The Pledge

by alone in the crowd   Nov 2, 2006

Every morning i stand,
my right hand over the left side of my body
i desperately try to make contact,
i hope to come close to the pulsing muscle in my chest.
hoping to create tension between my soul and the speech i pronounce.
hoping to feel a burning inside my chest as i state the words i have stated every day.
hoping to cherish each word and to let it linger as it passes through my lips.
dreaming that somewhere somehow there are children saying this pledge with every ounce of what they are.
saying it and dreaming to be like the people that have said this before them.
praying to be like the fathers of our country. Praying that this nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all will allow them to serve.
These children who believe that our country is the world and that the president is a super hero.
these children who have yet to have their minds molested by the rest of the world.
I pray that these children stand in their classrooms holding their hands over their hearts and let loose with a speech that they have longed to say since the last time they said it 24 hours before.
I pray that these children can say the pledge with as much passion as they do now all their lives..

I pray that these children lead our country with the innocence and ignorance that we all once had.

I pray that these children never stop saying this pledge, this pact of liberty, with all of their hearts.
