The Watcher

by elvenfire   Nov 8, 2006

Another day over, another day gone
The watcher stood still, waiting
For the setting of the sun

The eyes that look out to the sea
Bore sadness that's so deep
To gaze into its depth is to feel
A pain that is so steep

The wind caressed the watcher's face
It's ice cold fingers invite
The watcher to take its deadly lead
The fickle wind smiled in its spite

"Come here and i shall set you free,
Your cares will disappear,
And in my arms i promise you will find
The peace you long so dear."

The watcher stretched out his hands
As if to touch the phantom's voice
And another step his feet has made
Toward this final choice

The waves lapped up, climbed on his knees
And captured all his attention
Like children begging for a treat
He reveled in this fake affection

And through each step he slowly took
He felt like coming home
A gentle peace stole over him
Through the waves racing foam

"I come to you to set me free
Let my cares disappear
I've come to collect upon your promise
Now let there be no more fear."

A few more seconds passed
that felt like a thousand years
The watcher gently closed his eyes
And tasted his final tears

The watcher's knees finally buckled
And surrendered to the song
His ragged breath has ceased to be
The watcher watched no more.
