Do you remember

by Mizz Kayla   Nov 10, 2006

Do you remember when the world was beautiful?
when nothing had flaws?
when we didn't have to think about whether or not we'd grow up happy or sad because we lived for the moment;;
we played outside for hours because we could--homework only took about fifteen to twenty minutes
we didn't have to think about who-likes-who, but there was an occasional kindergarten romance
girls played with barbies and boys played with matchbox cars, and we had birthdays at chuck e. cheese
we didn't cry over break ups or fights, we cried over splinters and paper cuts;;
we cried if we were away from our parents, away from home
we never cared who wore what, because it didn't matter;;
all that mattered was that we were having fun
moms did hair and dads tied ties, and no one was embarassed by what their parents said
in summer we put on plastic sun glasses and in fall we put on earmuffs
we listened to the backstreet boys, nsync, britney spears, and the spice girls and we made up dances to their songs, performed for our parents
we didn't eavesdrop on conversations and we usually didn't lie
we picked flowers and put them on the kitchen table, we played games like candy land and we made lemonade stands in the front yard and sold cups for fifty cents
nobody cared if the girls played outside with the boys, because everyone knew that boys had cooties and no one would get more serious with them
we read picture books and helped bake cookies for christmas
nobody had much more responsibility for anything other than brushing your teeth in the morning and feeding the dog, much less worrying about if the garbage was taken out cramming for a test
we didn't know what the word pollution meant and we had no idea there was such a thing as depression
the "S word" was "shoot" and the "D word" was "darn"
simple magic tricks amazed us, and we never knew that there wasn't really any magic involved
we were afraid of ghosts and boogeymen, and we ran into mom and dads room if we had a nightmare
we didn't need to invite someone over to play with, because we had imaginary friends
we weren't afraid to catch bugs, and we had ant farms
for birthdays we gave hand-made cards instead of the kind you buy at hallmark or CVS
we danced to things like "celebration" or "the hokey pokey", and we had sing along tapes
we watched disney movies on VHS and couldn't sleep unless we had our favourite blankey or stuffed animal
we played on swingsets and we had relay races with the neighbors
everyone had training wheels on their bike, and we drove around in cars bought at toys-r-us
we all made forts out of anything we could find--blankets, clothespins, couches, tables, chairs, pillows--anything
we layed in the grass for hours and made shapes out of the clouds and had fisher price toys
all the girls had easy bake ovens
all the boys had a foam football
the only card game we knew how to play was go fish, and the only t.v. shows we watched were on nickelodeon or disney channel
you might remember are gulla-gulla island, franklin the turtle, winnie the pooh, are you afraid of the dark?, and face from nickelodeon, hello kitty and star dancers
we climbed trees and coloured outside the lines with crayola crayons
we skinned our knees and made bouquets out of dandelions
no one saw what was coming, and it hit us before we could resist it...
these are the days we will always remember, the times we were truly happy and didn't slam doors
these are the times we felt alive
this is for the kids who remember when the world was beautiful
