I'll be home for the Holidays

It’s been a week and you have failed to return
Every day my cheeks sting as my tears start to burn
I don’t understand dad, why hasn’t your lesson been learned?
I am the only one in this house who is the least bit concerned

The holidays are around the corner, will you be back?
Will I be here by myself eating Christmas snacks?
Thanksgiving in two weeks, will you be here to smile for Kodak?
By then daddy, do you think you’d want to unpack?

Or will you be at the bar, where you’ve been every night
Let me guess, you didn’t think I knew right?
You’ve been spotted after work drinking Bud Light
I guess your drunkenness explains why you’ve been so uptight

Let me answer my own questions, I’ll break it down
If you’re drinking all night, mom won’t let you come around
Your eyes get all glossy and you are really dumbfound
You won’t be home for the holidays if the bar is where you’re bound

Over the years you know how family oriented I’ve become
If your not here dad, that hurts more than a sore thumb
I’ll look at you and think “you selfish piece of scum”
But they say you win some and you lose some

So will you be home to cook the food and put up our tree?
I’d love it if you just have the courtesy to call me
I’m stuck here wondering where you will be
Just so you know, I’ll be home daddy

    Awww Chels what an absolute tear jerker this piece is...
    The last stanza just broke my heart Sweet Pea and I only wish I could be there for you.
    We never seem to be online at the same time and I miss our little chats over the past week. I will call you soon Sweet Pea, so make sure your phone is charged ....lol

    Keep the faith darlin and hold on to hope that's all we can do in these times of sadness. God does hear your prayers girl !

    Sometimes Christmas is so hard for me. I know it's a time for family, but sometimes family is never really there, and I miss the real meaning. I know exactly what this poem is talking about, you really wrote this well. I really hope this Christmas, everyone is home to their loved ones. Well done Chels, this was a really good poem, you expressed yourself well, and I hope you have a wonderful Christmas when it comes around.
