A Drug

by James   Nov 28, 2006

She sits ignored and distraught
From her wrists she bleeds
Alone, lost, in her own zone
All of her thoughts she feeds

From abuse to rape she died inside
When her spouse came home
She claimed it as inevitable when
He said she was his own

When she broke free she saw the world
Cold and uncaring
So finally she thought of painless death
As a more welcome bearing

She stole into a house at night
Looking for the pills
That even as small and bland objects
Gave her mind malevolent thrills

So on the day that she had left
To somewhere she arrived
Ending the burden, casting it out
Slowly eating her alive

To the world she said good-bye
Pretending to be swell
As she died, she saw no light
But heard her name in hell.
