The Painting

by Katie   Nov 29, 2006

Slowly she stepped down the stairs
Hoping for a glimpse of the unknown
Searching the unseeing stares
For the proper way to go

She turned a corner working lost
Now, confused
Looking at a painting lost
Of a romance between two beaus

The adoration on their faces
Made her want to shy
But she was transfixed in her paces
By their sad, searching eyes

She slowly sank to the floor
To unlock the secrets time had lost
Now finding the hidden door
She’s the one who’ll pay the cost

Carefully unraveling the truth
Their families did not want them wed
She became appalled as the story induced
That well before their time was due, the two were dead

Their spirits trapped within the painting
Close enough to feel each other
Suffering through the eternal waiting
Through time, an endless bother

She looked closer at those signified
And let loose a horrific gasp
For those the painting dignified
Were supposed to have lived in the past

How could this be she thought, horrified
How could this be?
How could I have died?
