She sits at home

by Caitlin Fedorak   Dec 7, 2006

Gunshots and explosions fill the air,
Dead bodies cover the ground; the soldiers cannot help but stare.
Is it their friend, is it their brother? There is no way in telling.
These soldiers are corrupt, they hear constant yelling.
Blood stained grass, dark grey skies,
There is no way of knowing how many men will not get to live the rest of their lives.

At the camp, one soldier sits on guard,
It is Valentines Day; he hopes to send his girl a card,
Whether it shall reach her, he will never know,
He only has hope that she will wait for this plain old Joe.

She sits at home; he is always on her mind,
Everything about him was so loyal, so passionate, and so kind.
She wishes he would return and put her mind at rest,
But all she can do is wait and be patient, she tries her best.
She must be strong, she mustn’t worry,
Because she knows, once the war is over, he’ll be home in a hurry.

The battlefield is roaring with the sounds of war,
He blasts his gun, but nothing can get his thoughts away from the girl he adores.
A grenade is thrown, he hurls it back,
Nothing can shield their ears from this blast.
His ears are ringing, but thankfully he is still alive,
However, many men around him are about to die.

She sits at home; he remains on her mind,
She can’t help but wondering if it will be his body that will be the next to find.
Holding back her tears, she kneels down and prays,
He will return, she says to herself, whether years, months or days.

He is hiding out in an abandoned building,
He hears footsteps, he holds his breath, he must restrain from breathing.
The enemy is near, he can feel their presence, he must take this chance,
There is no time for second guessing, he holds a firm stance,
He raises his gun slowly, but he is too late,
They knew he was there, they have sealed his fate.
He falls to the ground, his head in pain and his mind in a whirl,
And with his last moments, he thinks of his girl.

She sits at home; ten years later he is still on her mind.
Of course she remarried, she found a man who was charming and kind.
But this man could never replace her one true love,
It drives her crazy, but she knows he is in the heavens above,
But without him she feels empty, she feels lost and confused,
It is almost like her mind is being abused.
Her heart can’t take it, she yearns for death,
So she takes her life and puts her soul at rest.
