5:00 in the Morning

'Tis 5:00 in the morning,
I just got off the phone
With the person who
My best friend and I love,
We didn't know
Who he loved back,
But after this call,
'Tis plain to see,
The girl he loves isn't she.
I called him,
No answer.
Obviously, I thought.
He's in bed.
Three minutes later,
He called me back,
Asked me what was wrong,
Why I couldn't get to sleep,
I didn't know,
And I told him such,
I asked if I had woken him up,
Profusely apologized,
Just wanted to socialize,
I asked, without meaning to,
If he like her
In any fashion of the word.
No...not like that.
The words should have entered my easy like music,
It sounded to me like some egocentric rap,
I nodded my head,
And continued
With my idle chit-chat,
Not wanting a lull in conversation,
But it was 5:00 in the morning!
We each told each other not to
Dare stay on the phone
If the other dozed off,
But after thirty-second silences,
We'd say something else.
One part of the conversation
Sticks in my mind...
If I'm laying in bed
And holding my phone
And talking to you on the phone,
Then does that mean
You're lying next to me?
I guess so, he says.
Well, that's good.
'Cause I could really use a friend right now,
Oh, just any old friend? He asks,
No, no...only just you,
I replied with an
Aura of sarcasm.
Believe it or not,
His answer was,
I like that second answer better,
I could've kicked him
For making me laugh so hard
When I wanted to cry,
For making me want to live
When I felt like dying,
I told him,
I said,
I really should go
Before someone comes
To yell at us,
Okay, if you REALLY want to,
He says,
And I can just see his
Tired grin
As he makes me feel guilty,
Come on now,
I say,
Hang up the phone,
He sighs,
Okay,
Good...umm...morning?
Yeah,
I answer between laughs,
Good morning.
Love you.
Love you, he says back,
And hangs up the phone,
So concludes my thirteen minute
5:00 in the morning drone.
