Always watching

by Elizabeth   Dec 19, 2006

She absently shook her umberella
as she entered the library room
Adjusting her eyes for a moment
To the musty dark oak paneled gloom

The old man was there as usual
She wondered if he had a home
She sat in the corner furthest from him
Hoping he'd leave her alone.

Her mind drifted off as she read
Some book about broken romance
And memories invaded her head
As she looked at her past in a trance.

She'd achieved much in her life
Still she felt something missing
The old mans friendly "hello"
Disturbed her reminiscing.

"How are you"? she reluctantly asked
Not really wanting to know,
She didn't absorb his answer at all
She just wished that he would go.

"You know my dear you look so sad
I would love to helpyou"
He smiled at her kindly and continued
"There is nothing I wouldn't do"

She stood up abruptly to leave
What did he know about her?
How could a silly old man help?
She walked away and left him there,

And as she left the library that day
In the cold pouring rain
She carried her empty feeling with her
Confused by an aching pain.

And from the library window
God watched her and he cried
He cried because she didn't love him
Even though he'd tried.
