Looked Upon By Angels

by sibyllene   Dec 31, 2006

Looked upon by angels
with polyester wings,
who hovered there with memories
of small, forgotten things,

We took the first step upward,
from earth to Heaven's gate.
Beneath the star of Christmas we
encouraged roaring fate.

The lights were dim and twinkling
as we lay upon the ground-
the lisping of our whispers was
the only furtive sound.

A universe discovered
as your palm reached to my face-
my eyes you blessed without a word,
my waiting lips you traced.

It was silent when you kissed me,
even though our hearts beat fast.
In that moment I encountered
what would haunt me \'til the last.

Behold the sacred unity
between two broken souls.
The vital consecration of our
halves to become whole.

The angels watched our worship
as we sung our silent hymns.
Our lips met up in quiet prayers,
still earnest in their whims.

A kiss is but a threshold
with briars at the frame
and roses trampled underfoot
and overhead, the same.

And though I'll never sorrow for
that kiss, despite what came,
the thorns from those first petals
made the angels cry for shame.

--------------
For today, the anniversary of a kiss, given and received like a gift beneath my Christmas tree.
